It has been a long journey of determination, but not without its constant amount of rejection, failure, upset, and defeat. I vowed last January 2014 that I was going to make one of my dreams come true by having my art published in a magazine. Every month I’d make one of kind creations to submit. Sometimes I’d submit to two magazines in the same months, so double the projects, but they had to be different projects. The deadlines were brutal in my house. I became a crazy person at deadline time. Everything stopped at the house. No laundry was done, no dishes done, and we’d eat out because my projects took over the dining room table. Every month for the last eleven months I was gracefully rejected with no constructive feedback. It was hard. I never knew why I wasn't chosen...
I’d pout and stew for a day or two until the next submission information came out. I’d think to myself, can I do this again? Why do I keep putting myself through this? Why aren’t I good enough? Why don't they like my projects? And then I’d say to myself, “yes, you are good enough" and "yes, you can do this again.” And if you were close to me, you know I joke about my "box of rejects" every month. I had to laugh or I think I would have cried and just given up. Each month I'd pick myself up again and try again. I'd get excited about the new themes, new products, and new ideas I had running through my head.
On November 26th I received an email with details for the next magazine issue for Fall 2015, but it was due by December 19th. I make over fifty Christmas cards, do lots of baking, shop for four kids, my hubby, and extended family. Could I really squeeze in making some cards right now, in December, for NEXT falls magazine? Was I crazy? Maybe a little, but Autumn is my favorite time of the year, so I squeezed it in, and submitted eight cards. And finally this month, not one, but four of my card creations were chosen to be published in Cardmaker magazine in the Fall 2015 issue. It couldn't be more perfect. I submitted my best projects to date, they chose four of my favorites to be published in my favorite magazine, during my favorite time of the year...Fall and my birthday month! It's the best Christmas and birthday present a girl could get!!!
We also used my experience as a teaching tool for our kids. We talked about rejection, defeat, giving up, perseverance, and how hard work does pay off. So, if mom can push on for a whole year and not give up every month to achieve my dreams, so can they. And so can you!
It truly is a dream come true. I am above cloud nine and over the moon with excitement. My cards are top secret until the issue comes out in September 2015, but then I can share them right here with you all. And we'll celebrate again then too! Maybe a Fall crafty giveaway package will be given to a lucky follower.
I can tell you…and only you…that some of the products I used are made or distributed from right here in Colorado by two local companies. Holly Berry House Original Stamps in Old Colorado City designs that make their own gorgeous rubber stamps. I've met the owners and have seen their process of taking a drawing and turning it into a stamp, it's an amazing little shop with the most exquisite samples I've ever seen. Creative Impressions in Colorado Springs, is another hidden gem. They mainly sell to wholesalers, but a local secret is that they do sell retail too...to anybody that walks in Mon-Fri and they have an online store too. I have met this incredible owner too and she is so full of energy and excitement for her products and is loaded with ideas.
